How Elijah and Heron Paid $162,000 of Debt in Under 3 Years

For so many American couples, finances can be one of your biggest hurdles. How do you manage them? How do you even talk about them? And, of course, what do you do about debt? Some couples never find that key to communication, transparency, and teamwork when it comes to handling money as a united front, while others have got it all figured out. And we’ve got a smart money couple who are definitely killing the personal finance game!

On today’s episode of The His & Her Money Show, Heron and Elijah are coming in to tell us about their amazing journey to financial freedom and break down how they got to the point where they decided to and successfully paid $162,000 of debt once and for all. Today, Heron works in mental health and Elijah is an implementation consultant – and after just two years and ten months, they’re living totally debt free!

There’s no feeling like having your own money and getting to keep the money that you’re earning versus having it go to student loans.

Heron got her first real look at how much she owed in student loans during her last year of grad school, which was the wake-up call that started it all. She and Elijah both had their own debt-free plans, but she knew they needed to tackle their finances aggressively rather than passively, letting it pile up more and more. Heron was diving straight into the spreadsheets but Elijah wasn’t as easily convinced. 5 months later, when they were finally on the same page, their debt-free journey truly began!

They started out with $135,400 in student loans, $9,600 in car loans, and $9,947 in credit cards. While they were planning their wedding, they were also having important conversations about their financial futures. Through careful planning, intense research, and savvy strategies, Heron and Elijah quickly got on a roll, and as the debt snowball continued, this smart money couple finally made their last payoff and couldn’t be happier!
