How to Be a Successful Youtuber

On today’s episode of The His & Her Money Show, we’re going to discuss how to be a successful Youtuber. Our special guest Sean Cannell is a YouTuber, international speaker, and a coach that helps entrepreneurs build their influence and income with an online video presence.

With a subscriber base of over 700,000 and his videos being viewed over 43 million times, he definitely knows his stuff. His two YouTube channels Think Media and Video Influencers, helps thousands of people achieve their goals. He has also written a fantastic new book entitled YouTube Secrets.

Sean says that his passion is to help people build their influence with online video and YouTube. He runs an online video education company out of Las Vegas with online courses, training, and workshops, as well as advice regarding equipment to use when filming.

Humble Beginnings

Sean started living out his passion in 2003 in Arlington Washington when his church’s youth pastor handed him a camera and asked him to start making videos for the youth announcements. This was before the days of YouTube and Social media. Sean remembers that his first videos were very bad because he didn’t know about strategy and thumbnails etc, but because he continued and did not give up, he really got into the swing of things.

He has this advice on how to punch fear in the face: you need to be disciplined to do it. A way to get over the fear is by shooting a video on your smartphone and uploading it in the next 24 hours. You don’t have to make it public, it’s just a way that will get you familiar with holding the phone, recording yourself, and getting into it. It doesn’t have to be a long video, it’s just to get you going, to take that first step.

How To Get Started

If you don’t have the courage yet for your first video, you can start by committing to writing a story on Snapchat or Instagram every day. One of Sean’s clients began by committing to place short stories about Home Schooling on Snapchat every day for six months.

A story includes a beginning, a middle, and an end. On Snapchat, this will entail snaps of 10 seconds each. His client would say something like: “Heather here. Today I just want to answer a quick question about the best homeschool books you need to read.”

The second snap would then tell which books she recommends. By doing this she was promoting and honing her craft and getting used to being recorded. When she decided to make her first video, she was ready and confident, and had punched fear in the face!

Earning Income From YouTube

In 2009 Sean’s wife was hospitalized after being ill for 2 years with gastroparesis. At the same time, he was doing some deep soul searching and he stumbled upon a CD from Success Magazine was Gary Vaynerchuk was talking about how it was time to cash in on your passion and using your online presence to do it.

Sean learned that affiliate marketing is when you talk about a product on your channel and place a link in the description below the video. If you are signed up for their affiliate program, you get a commission when viewers use the link to buy the product.

Starting Off On The Right Foot

Sean suggests that when starting a YouTube channel, first define your audience, your target market, and describe it in minute detail. Ask yourself the question, who am I trying to reach? Don’t make the mistake of trying to reach everybody.

Secondly, define your value proposition. Ask yourself, what is your promise, the value that you are going to add for people watching your YouTube channel. How often are you going to upload videos?

When it comes to your target market, ask yourself these three questions. Is there a market of what you want to talk about? How big is that market? Does that market map or match your ambitions or your targets for your income, your reach, and your impact?

Overcoming The Obstacles

Even though Sean and his wife went through major challenges, they kept at it. From doing videos in a basement they now own a huge, successful business.

Just like top sportsmen have coaches, he and his wife have gone to marriage counseling to get coached on how to have a thriving marriage, instead of a mediocre one.

As Sean reminded us all, pressure makes diamonds, and in those challenging times, keep your head down and put one foot in front of the other and keep trusting God.
