How to Go into Business with Your Spouse

Teamwork is so imperative in marriage. Loving and supporting each other gives a great foundation to work and play together. And trust goes a long long way to secure unity. On today’s episode of The His & Her Money Show, Robert and Tammira Lucas tell us their story.

Tammira describes herself as a serial entrepreneur, mom, and wife as well as a business professor in Baltimore. She is the founder of Moms As Entrepreneurs in underserved communities.

She launched her own co-working space for mothers which provides babysitting services for moms. Another company she runs, The Business Dr, provides strategic marketing solutions for social media and business consulting.

Robert started in business with his father, running a home service for carpet cleaning which grew to a good level. He branched out and now owns his own used car dealership. He was born to be an entrepreneur.

Support

Robert and Tammira communicated and shared their hopes and dreams with each other. Supporting each other has helped them on their journey. The same went for their finances.

They would agree on how and when to spend it. They designed their life and went after it. Instead of nice clothes and shoes, they knew investing their money in real estate is a smarter choice for their future.

Another area they focused on was time management by taking advantage of every minute of every day. And intentionality propelled them towards their goals.

Their interests become their businesses. Once they decide to start something, they go for it. Robert does his research very well. Because of this, Tammira knows she can trust him.

Failures

In any enterprise, there are going to be failures and mistakes. Knowing that it’s okay to fail, is important when starting your own business. Getting back up from said failures is the key to success. Adjust and move forward.

So how do you know when to let go. Tammira explains that the figures don’t lie. When a business hasn’t made money for a year, it’s a sign that something needs to change. Being honest with yourself, having a come to Jesus moment, is crucial for success.

Partners

Robert suggests, if your spouse is not an entrepreneur and skeptic of ventures, make a small investment and show him/her the success. That will build your spouse’s belief. Talking will always help. And don’t forget date night.

Robert and Tammira agree that more than one stream of income is necessary for this game. This will be able to give you more peace of mind for your financial portfolio. And don’t skimp on healthcare and life insurance.

Stress

Biting the bullet and becoming your own boss brings its own stress. Tammira testified that when she was going through a rough patch, she realized that God is her provider.

Prayer is powerful. Surrendering to Him will bring you peace. He’s got this. He has the whole world in His hands. That includes you.

Robert has tenacity. His view is, if it didn’t work the third time, try it another time. The next time might be the right time but if you don’t try, you’ll never know.

Legacy

Building generational wealth and teaching people how to do it, is very close to Tammira’s heart. By teaching our children about wealth, it will reverberate into future generations. We can do this by involving our children in our business ventures and being interested in their ideas.

If you want to start your own business, build it with the right people, and do your market research.

Network with people in the industry. Know it’s going to take sweat acuity. Get a mentor. Keep a balance between your work and your family. God first. Family second. Business third.
