How Maya Used Mystery Shopping to Get Out of Debt

Debt is nothing new for the average American. Car loans, consumer debt, student loans, and all other types of debt have fast become another piece of day-to-day life, for students, singles, couples, and families all across the country.

But there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, even if it doesn’t seem like it. Living the American lifestyle doesn’t have to mean living with debt, and if you can motivate yourself to push and stay on the right track, you could be well on your way to smashing YOUR debt once and for all.

On today’s episode of The His & Her Money Show, Maya Lewis is joining us for another fantastic debt elimination story. Maya is a Maryland-born project management analyst, self-proclaimed Excel spreadsheet queen, and debt-smashing superstar. Over just two years she single-handedly paid off an incredible $73,000, and this is how she did it!

I don’t think it’s ever too soon to start a healthy relationship with your finances.

Maya graduated from the University of Maryland with a Business degree and not one, but two degrees in Information Technology – so it’s no surprise that most of her debt accumulated from student loans.

And it was mountainous – she felt trapped. She’d already considered paying off all her debt by the time the breaking point came. This was during a house-hunting incident where a real estate agent suggested that Maya’s then-boyfriend submit the next application on his own after a homeowner overlooked their offer for another couple. Maya and her boyfriend both had good credit and steady jobs – but Maya had too much debt.

After that, Maya dedicated herself to financial freedom. Not only did she want “financial fitness” for herself, but for her future family too!

It was a long haul of sacrifices and cutting back, but in the end, it was more than worth it; staying focused and keeping her eye on the prize, Maya strategized, budgeted, and even mystery-shopped her way to debt freedom! She still hasn’t purchased her dream home yet, but she’s well on her way!
